Final Project : Transfer Trolley
The idea is to design & make a final working project by making use of all the knowledge I acquired during the past weeks in Fab Academy.
My Project is simple but to develop it completely, I need to make use of a all of everything I learned at Fab Academy during the past 14 weeks. My project will also make use of almost all the machines available at FabLab.
The Design of Transfer Trolley

what will it do?
As the name indicates the "Transfer Trolley" is a self driven automation setup / equipment to transfer Chiller units from one station to other station in a Chiller manufacturing plant.
The real life setup is way too large to be designed & developed in Fab Lab. I will be creating a prototype model of the real life model by scaling down the equipment size. At the same time I had to create a working model with all the functionalities displayed in the final project by projecting all the array of knowledge gained in the Fab lab. Hence I designed the scaled down model in Solid Works.
who's done what beforehand?
Over the ages in the mechanical industry of material handling there have been many transfer trolleys designed and being used on daily basis. But most of the transfer trolleys have a driving unit often which is a motor driven car. The capacity of the transfer trolleys are limited to few tons upto 10 to 15Tons only.
The transfer trolley that I designed will be a special purpose transfer trolley which can transfer chillers weighing from 6 Tons to 63 Tons & maximum size upto 11mts by 4 mts.
what materials and components will be required?
The instructions given by our FabLab Mentor Henry & coordinator Vipul is very clear that the final project should be low cost.
For the prototype the materials required will be as listed below

how much will it cost?
The total cost of making the Transfer Trolley at Fab Lab will be around Rupees. 6000. that is approximately $93.
The commercial "Transfer trolley" will be around Rupees 2 Crores. that is approximately $310000
what parts and systems will be made?
The entire Transfer Trolley will be made in Fab Lab & using the products already available in the Fab Lab Bombay Inventory.
The mechanical structure will be made from 6mm MDF by using the laser cutting fabrication process.
The wheel sets required for the movement will be made by 3D printing process using Ultimaker 2.0 machine available at Fab Lab Bombay.
The electronics required for my project are available in the Fab Lab inventory. PCB milling will be done on Roland Modella 40-X machine suggested by the Digital Fabrication team globally. We have sets of soldering machines & accessories required for the same in the Fab Lab.
I will be using the same stepper motors & gestalt nodes used for our group project of making MTM. The cables, wires & all the other things required for completing the circuit are available in the Fab Lab.
what processes will be used?
- 3D designing using SolidWorks
- 2D design : Using AutoCAD
- Laser Cutting : For cutting 6mm MDF
- 3D Printing
- Eagle: For making switch schematic & board design
- Atmel Studio: For programing the micro-controller
- PCB milling/electronics production
- Embedded programing
what tasks need to be completed?
The plan is to complete the project work within the schedule of the Fab Academy program. The global review dates given to Fab Lab BOmbay team is on 21/06/2017. I will be the first team member to present my project work. The learnings gained during the entire journey of Fab Academy program need to be put in place in one single project. Hence I will be completing the entire project work right from design to testing the system in next 5 - 6 days & will be ready for the review.
how will it be evaluated?
It can be evaluated based on the way it looks, the processes(learned during Fab Academy) implemented successfully while making it and finally the functionality of the end product. First and foremost, It should not look like a very basic prototype as we have learned to design and make good product during the 2D and 3D design week. I am very excited to go ahead and make a really good Transfer Trolley which works like what I have decided to do at the start of the Fab program.
